Fri 3/12 – the farside presents: LEATHERFACE!, Yesterday’s Ring, Witchfinger, Lucky Scars @ St Mikes

sometimes when promoting a show you use words like “epic” or “legendary”, but i promise you it’ll be a long time before i’ll mean those descriptives with anywhere near this amount of sincerity. on friday night, march 12th, the farside will be hosting LEATHERFACE, a british melodic punk band that began writing and playing music 22 years ago. leatherface was and is a pioneering force in punk music, heavily influencing bands such as HOT WATER MUSIC (responsible for encouraging leatherface out of retirement years ago), AVAIL, DILLINGER FOUR, et cetera.
leatherface relies on the gruff and intelligent lyrics of frankie stubbs, whose howls and coughed vocals seem to emanate from an unending and unimproving pit of despair and frustration deep inside of him. this is the type of show you will not want to miss if you’re a fan of punk music. fans of leatherface would maybe travel great distances to see the band play in a setting this intimate. if you haven’t heard leatherface yet, i’d suggest starting with 1991’s “mush”, which is essentially a perfect punk rock document and one of the best albums ive personally ever heard. seriously!
sorry for the prescript. here’s the details!:
**** FRIDAY MARCH 12th / Doors 9PM
*** $8 for 2 touring bands
** 21+ (and we apologize profusely, this honestly made the most sense for the show. we wrestled with all of this)
LEATHERFACE (Sunderland, UK) – legendary punk rock outfit
YESTERDAY’S RING (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) – thoughtful punk/country hybrid; ex- saint catherines, fifth hour hero
WITCHFINGER (Tallahassee, Florida) – pissed off, energetic local pop punk
LUCKY SCARS (Tallahassee, Florida) – local punk/oi mainstays!

I still don’t understand why this couldn’t be held at any of the other establishments that both allow drinking and persons under the drinking age. We’re progressive/logical enough of a community to understand just HOW unfair this is to too many of our friends and loved ones.. pssh, being barred is so 1990.

the farside was approached about the show, and initially we agreed to it being held at our venue. but while it wouldve been selfishly cool to keep it at our tiny janitor office turned sober show space, logic finally set in and we realized the potential problems we were going to have with drinking outside, enforcing a sober door policy with a straight face and potential capacity issues (not to mention asking a band/audience known for having drinks/smokes to abide by our rules when most wont return and could care less about our ethics/sustainability).
engine room was booked that night, and i honestly couldnt see a better alternative than st mikes (a bar owned/run by friends). was there one? i didnt gloss over the 21+ thing lightly, but all things considered this seemed like our best option.
i grew up hating 21+ shows, and have grown up to promote exclusively all ages shows. this was and will be the only 21+ show i will book. leatherface is a favorite band of mine, and i wanted to try to give THEM the best show we could this time around. theyre touring the US with dead to me this summer, and we’re hoping to stay in touch with all parties to try to bring them back to town (and will do our best to make it all ages if they come).
again, please dont direct negativity towards either st mikes or the farside on this one. it was a call i made, and if youre missing leatherface because of it all i can say is that im HONESTLY sorry and have been beating myself up about it. im sorry – tony
